Dickin Medal Awarded To Sniffer Dog
The Victoria Cross is one of the most recognized military awards in the world. The Dickin Medal is less known by civilians and military personnel alike, but in the Canine world it is the equivalent of the Victoria Cross.
In 2009 a black Labrador Retriever, sniffer dog, named Treo received this award for his conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Treo served as an Improvised Explosive Devices commonly known as IED sniffer dog with British Military Forces in the War in Afghanistan.
Sniffer Dog Saved Scores Of Soldiers’ Lives
Treo is credited with saving the lives of scores of British soldiers as he hunted out bombs and weapons the Taliban had hidden.
With his handler, retired Sergeant Dave Heyhoe, Treo retired in 2009, after spending years in his duty as an expert sniffer dog.
Sniffer Dog Discovered Improvised Explosive Devices
Treo discovered countless improvised explosive devices while risking his own life to save those of British military personnel. Among his accomplishments was finding a daisy chain improvised explosive device, commonly referred to as an IED, in Sangin, Helmand Province in March 2008. That discovery alone saved the lives of many British soldiers and Treo is credited with countless other findings in his role as a trained sniffer dog.
Now retired to the quiet of Cheshire England, Treo stands as an amazing example of the ability of sniffer dogs to hunt out and identify improvised explosive devices. The work of dogs like Treo cannot be understated.
